Unit 1 Pre production report (Re submission)

Requirements for production

The type of production I am going to talk about is a web-serial, we call it a short film  the genre for this is going to be teen thriller/drama, this is because the short film  is mostly aimed at teenagers and adults  So where the last one ended the next starts from the same point. However it is also a serial because it focuses on one character each episode. For this short film I will be using single camera production all through out the webisode because it will show clear shots and you can plan out and think about the shots you are using. However using single camera techniques can be better to edit because you can look at the shots in much more detail.

Finance
Film producers get there finance either from them investing or having there own personal money to produce the film. When investing in the money it either needs to paided back from the production of the film or when it gets distributed. Also if using there own personal money it will benefit them in the long run because again of the film distributing and they will get there money back and more. However others would try and get there money through the lottery or the BFI (british film institute). Therefore for my production/short film I wouldn't be able to afford any of this equipment because none of us have the money for it. But we have college to provide us with all the equipment this will be much easier and much more cheaper. The only thing I will be paying out for is the food for the crew, I will paying this with my own money. The transport for the actors is easier and we also don't need to pay because we have free bus passes which can get us on any bus for free. The props I might need may need to be bought because college won't provide them either plus we can get what we want to use, it want be the same as others either.
Budget requirements-This is what I will be using to shoot my short film                                                                                                          with, the equipment below will briefly explain what it is and how much it would if we didn't have the college equipment to use.
Cameras- £277/£1230.00 this is how much cameras would cost normally, but in this situation because im doing it in college i will not need to buy any cameras. The college luckily is going to provide it for us. It will also cost £500 per day to hire for a camera man .

Lights- The price range for the lights would be £54.99- £183.64. The lights I will not be paying for either because I will be shooting my short film during the day so I will have  natural lighting.

Microphone-  Hiring as microphone should cost around the same price as hiring lighting or maybe a bit less. I will not need a microphone because the actors will be recorded for a voiceover for the video.

Editing suite-To hire a editing suite it cost around £150 for half a day and £250 for a full day. Your literally paying for every hour you use so use it wisely. In the editing suite you get a wide range of editing software to use on the macs e.g Adobe Creative Sutie 5, Final cut studio 3 etc... I will be booking the mac suite at college which has all the software on it.

Time and scheduling

Time and scheduling in the media industry is very important especially if you are producer or director. However any role you play in the media industry you always need to be on time with whatever you do. If a deadline is not met, if your in the film industry then your holding back the whole film. You would loose the company a lot of money because the film will get distributed on time which everything has to take a step back. The produces will also loose money because they will have to buy more time and more time to create the film. The days I will be filming is either Wednesdays when everyone finish at the same time or weekend when everyone should be free. The short film I will be shooting shouldn't take that long to shoot but It might take abit longer to edit and everything because some of us no a lot more about programmes on the mac then others. It should take about 2-3 weeks to shoot hopefully no longer than that. We will all need to organise times and places to meets and shoot the my short film . However in my short film i will need produce a schedule for the day so everyone nows what they are doing and how long it will take to do it.

Location
For my short film i will be filming it in a hotel in Woolwich or somewhere that is close to the actors and us crew members. Also having somewhere close means it wouldn't cost a lot in travel for some people as we have free bus passes to get places. However there are other locations that i would like to use like a old looking cabin this will be located in Hartlip this is where my Nn and Grandad lives this is in the country side. This wont be close to my actors however i can drive down there and i will take them with me. This will take about 40 mins on the motorway. However using the cabin it will create a great horror short film.

Crew and Personal
In the short film i will have 8 crew members some which will be the the actors, the rest will be camera man, someone who will be telling the actors what to do so the director. Some of the crew maybe better at filming than other because they may have more experience, such as having experience in using the camera, directing people how to play there roles, also the way some people set it up.  To hire a talent it will cost £50-60 pound, however I wont be paying for a talent because I will be using my own friends and colleagues at college. It might be easier to use someone out of a drama course instead of someone who is friends because you cant trust them to behave and they might just mess around, you wont get it done in time and as I said in time and scheduling it is all about time and you cant waste any of it.

Props and Costume
In my short film I will not be needing a lot of costume as it is a real life situation and everyone will be dressed in normal clothes. However props will be using are reflectors for the production stage and the post production stage i will be using an IMAC, final cut pro x and compressor. Also for the costume i may need some fake blood and a weapon or sharp object which i can find on ebay or go to a costume shop.
This costume shop is also local to my college which is easier.
267A Main Rd, Sidcup, Kent DA14 6QL- Costume shop

Facilities

To film and edit my short film the facilities i will be using are in college, for my short film i will be using a professional camera, tri-pop, lighting kit, microphone kit. I will be hiring these equipment from college which we have policy where we can borrow the cameras and equipment and give them back in a certain amount of days. If i wasn't in college and this happened in a real life situation then i would have to buy all the equipment myself and all the editing software myself. However if i worked for a company they might pay and lend me the equipment because im shooting for them but in my situation im lucky because i have college that will let borrow and use the equipment. However i also have Apple mac's in college so they have the editing software such as Final Pro cut X so i can edit my short film and make it how i want. However other facilities i will be using will be public transport such as buses and trains, however everyone in my group has a free oyster but only have to pay when getting on trains. That will only cost £10 however for my short film my location my actors will not have to pay for anything because i will be getting as car to drive down to my location. For my location i will not need to call council or anything because its a family house so i wont need to ask permission. If this happened in real life then i will need to ask permission to use my location and i will not be able to use unless i do get permission. However with transport the company would pay for you transport and travel.

Timescale

Keeping track of time is key in media industry this is because if you book an editing suite out you only got that certain amount of time before your time is up and you would have payed for it.So when im creating my short film even though im not paying for any of the equipment i have still borrowed it and other groups may want to use it so i cant keep it for weeks, so when i borrow the camera i can only use it for a certain amount of time. I will make a schedule when im filming i will give this to my actors so they no when im filming at what times. However i will be doing day to night so i might film at like 3/4pm so its not the brightest time of the day but it will still be day light and not dark. My short film doesn't consist of a many actors so everything should go smoothly because theirs  not a lot of things to consider.

Code of Practice and Regulation

There are documents by regulation that must be have to make our short film successful, some examples of this are pictures and locations, we need to take videos of our locations and forms for the owners to fill in so we no we have permission to film on there site, actors need to sign forms as well to show there permission to be filmed. Also health and safety regulations will have to go through the BBFC because if my film wanted to be shown in the UK i would have to send it to them so they can regulate it and give it a specification for an age certification. However my film is going to be shown on an online platform such as Youtube they cannot regulate my short film but if its was going to appear on Netfilx can age rate it but cannot regulate it because it is a online platform as well. Also i am filming my short film at a family home so i dont need to ring and ask for any permission.

Materials
Sound library materials i will use will be of Youtube because i can get copyright free music of there. this means that  you can use the music and it wont be copyrighted. This will get sourced either from Youtube or Soundcloud, and getting different sound effects you can get these from Youtube. The cost of these will be free because Youtube is a free site and you can download music from this site. Using non-original material, such as the mac suite will be used for the editing of my short film, also all the software will be used that will be used from college as well.

Contributors

Contributors are the directors, camera operator, producer and actors who are featured in my short film.In my short film i will need actors as i wont be able to use my crew because they all have an important part in my short film. I have found my actors by using my friends from outside college because i no they will be serious about being in my short film. I also had to get them to fill in a permission slip this is shown just in case something happens.

Final Proposal

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to get my pitch across to the audience and sell the ideas to producers to get the film made. When writing up my proposal i want to talk about my ideas and how i have come up with this information about my target audience and that. I watched a few trailers on short horror films and trailers for cinema films, and i discovered that when watching them they all was nearly the same. They all have some sort of paranormal theme to it, or someone was getting murdered or possessed. So for my idea i thought about people in a bar getting drunk and getting spiked and hallucinating in the toilet. Another idea was to find a deserted location and maybe getting a group of friends to do some voodoo or some magic and it goes terribly wrong. My short film was influenced by a film called Unfriended which was released in 2014 a group of friends on a social media site that find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force that is being used by there dead friends account. This film was rated 5.7/10 which i think it rather good because its half way from being a top film.

Film Synopsis

My short film consists of:
someone being on facetime to their friend and they see someone behind them when on facetime. They get taken and killed, you just hear screaming.

Hook- The hook of my short film is when they first getting into a conversation of one of them saying that someone is in the house with them.

Twist- The people who was the murder and the victim end up say they are messaging around. She knocks on the doore opens it and its her friend standing there trying to show that she is messing around, she then lashes out and stabs her.

Tagline- I have a few tagline that i have thought of but i havent choose an offical one yet
'Watch who you bring home'
'If you don't scream you no its over'
'You might think twice before answering facetime'
'Social media is it really what you think'

Film Rating

With looking through my research about horror and thriller films i have come to the conclusion that my horror short film can be rated at a 15 because there is not going to be any gruesome scenes in it, its just going to be really jumpy. I have choose to rate and certify my short film as a 15 because i:t may contain:

  •   strong violence
  •  frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
  •   discriminatory language or behaviour
  •   drug taking
However throughout my film it will have a little bit of violence but not to much because otherwise i would of put the age rating up to an 18. There will be a bit of blood but nothing over the top so it will still be moderated at a 15.The horror sequences will not happen frequently throughout my short film this is because of what i have rated my film at.

Primary research

When i have done my research for my short film i have looked at some profiles on either YouTube or Facebook and they are showing that more people are into horror films with more a scare to it and less blood and guts, however some people were saying that horror films are getting more boring because more and more that come out are beginning to be very similar such as a possessed house or something to do with a exorcist. People are more interested in thrillers because it creates a lot more suspense, unlike horrors where you know what's happening next.
I found this research on YouTube this shows that thrillers are getting a lot more views then some horrors this is because the generation now are mostly are on the computer watching the latest films.
However my research shows that I want to do a horror short film, it's mostly because they don't get a bad review and people still watch them, I want mine to be different and catch the audiences attention.

secondary research

My secondary research is I research TV documentrys to do with cyber bullying and different things that happen with modern day social media. I remembered that I watched one on BBC 3 ages ago to do with getting bullied through social media and this girl feeled trapped because she couldn't get away from it. This programme was called 'The Anti Social Network' this actually helped me choose what I wanted to do with my short film.  I also found a film called Unfriended this made my idea come together because even though its a horror it still had a message going across to the audience about cyber bullying.

summery of all research

My summery of all my research is that I found out that when researching about my target audience is that most of my audience prefer thriller films than horror. I found out this information by looking on IMDB this showed me all reviews and audiences reviews. Also this showed me when I looked for films for my research it gave me other film suggestion so I can watch them as well.

unique selling point

My unique selling point  would be the that  Sam thinks Laura has actually been killed but it's all a fake. So this may have something to do with the twist as well. I think this would be the unique selling point because it different to other horror films because it's mostly someone gets killed and that's it they are dead, but Laura is still alive when she turns up at Sams door. This doesnt happen in most films the victim will normally stay dead instead of being alive.

budget

The budget for my short film will be £50-£60 this is because of where I want to film my short film, it will be either in a room or a abandoned building, which makes it abit more scary. However using a room would be for free l, I would just be paying for food, costume, travel. The camera and equipment is for free we can book this out at college, and book it back in when we have finished. However for editing of my film I can use the facilities in college such as the Mac suite.

Regulation and Certification

Most horror or thriller films has the certification of a 15 or 18 nothing under this is because they are not suitable for anyone under the age of 15. They are purely made for over 15 because they are scary and they most likely have gruesome scenes in them. However also strong language, violence scenes. When it comes to the certification of it BBFC deal with this. In order to protect children from unsuitable and even harmful content in films and videos and to give consumers information they might need about a particular film or video before deciding whether or not to view it, the BBFC examines and age rates films and videos before they are released. Ofcom, is the government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom.

Revision development of of ideas/changes

My idea has changed a lot over the past couple of weeks this is because when watching different short films and listening to other people ideas, I wanted to change it. However I always kept the idea of using social media in them because I think it's a modern thing using technology and technology evolves around everyone lifestyle, so this may give my short film as a chance to be seen in a short film festival because I'm using modern ideas to entertain the audience.

Locations

My location for my short film is going to be in a room or a abandoned house where it looks more creepy and more realistic. However i would want the room or bedroom to look really homely and more believable.

Distribution

Now on distributing my short film, my short film is going to be distributed or shown at short films festivals. Short film festivals are where distributors go to look at short films and if they are impressed  they can pick it and promote it in their specific area they are in. . Also gaining the maker some sort of reputation for their artistic work. Also my short film also can be shown on Netflix this is because if it got picked at a film festival, then they can promote it and put it on Netflix. Youtube may also be a good place to upload maybe first because you will be targeting your audience on the channels. Also people at short film festivals such as producers may want to watch it on Youtube because it is much easier to watch because it is worldwide.
