HI

Hi

For my last short film i have chosen my own one which is called 'Hi' by Bahaish Kapoor. This is a non linear film because throughout the film the main character goes through flash backs, this is making the film look deconstructed. This is also a single drama because it is like a film just shorter. However the genre of this film is horror because the front image also gives it away.

The first shot you see is a establishing shot, this shows the audience the location and the atmosphere of the film. The atmosphere looks busy and hectic. However we hear digetic sounds such as car horns, cars driving around. The flashing light of the motorbike could symbolise the pathway the character is talking on her right.

This image is a mid shot the director has used this to show the woman looking worried and upset about something. The director has filmed this through the tv because it makes the clip look more scary for the audience. Looking through the tv gives it the effect of it being very dark and gloomy in her house. However it could also be showing about her and how her feelings are. She could feel trapped in the house and that why the director has used the tv so she looks like she is stuck inside it. There is hardly any lighting in this clip they want it to be dark as possible but still able to see her. Also in this clip she is on the phone as you can see not that clearly. The director has zoomed in closer and closer as the phone is ringing more until they pick up.

The director has used a mid shot again to show the way she is sitting down to show her body language. She looks uncomfortable and shes sitting in an awkward angle. The camera has been positioned under neath something to show that maybe someone is watching her because the way the camera is it seems secretive. On the other hand it could be the opposite because it could be showing that she is very lonely and by herself at the moment. You can also see this because the camera is blocking out everything else in the room except from her also saying she is lonely. There is lighting coming from behind but its not on her, symbolizing that shes not happy in anyway. In the clip you can also her a lot of her breathing suggesting she under a lot of stress,

The director deliberately has used depth of field to blur this image out. The reason it could be blurred is because the woman is sleeping the blurriness could suggest she is having bad dreams and her is not clear. The colour of sheets is pink however to her that could suggest happiness, laying on a nice bright colour sheets could show that where she feels safe. The camera is used to zoom into her face creating a close up to show her facial expressions while sleeping. As the camera gets closer to her face the image gets much clearer to see, this might imply that the camera is symbolizing someone or something getting more closer to her and is getting a better vision of her. There is no sound in this clip to show that she is sleeping and shes peaceful.

These four images are of a flash back or dream she is having when she has fallen asleep. This  shows that the film is non linear because of these rearranged events she is having. In the first image it is of a establishing shot the director has done this to show that the woman's surrounding has changed from in her bedroom to outside daytime. The audience maybe thinking about why there is a random car with the door open in this scene because it is a flashback its taken her back to her past. Even though it looks daytime out its still has that feeling that shes dreaming because it has that dark tone to it. On the second image its a long shot of the little girl standing on some sort of bridge that crosses over a river. The director has used a long shot because he wants the audience to feel that the little girl is far away and that you cant see her face properly. At the start of this scene non digetic sound was being used, however the pace of the music picked up a lot because the scene got more intense as
it went on. However when the pace gets faster this could suggest that something is going to happen, this makes the audience feel that something bad or good might happen because the surroundings doesn't look that scary through the natural lighting that is being used. In the 3rd clip i have used its an establishing shot basically setting the atmosphere, however we already no the surroundings of the scene so the director my have shown this shot half way the woman having the dream because
maybe she has forgotten what it looks like. But standing on both sides
of the bridge is is the woman and the little girl, this is where it may get
more intense for the audience because they cant see clearly what is going on. However the music gets really loud and intense when it shows the shot because you cant see that closely what is going on, this is when the music picks up a lot of pace. This is why cuts of the shots get much quicker as well to make it look more like a horror film.  In the last shot i have used it is a over the shoulder shot because you can see that the woman is standing there but she is out of focus because the director wants the audience to no that she is talking to the little girl. In these clips the 180 degree rule has been used because the camera doesn't move that much and if it does it just zooms in to the other camera.

The director has used a close up of her face because she is looking really scared and shocked. The lighting in the image is that it is on her and where she is standing is light. However the way she looks like she is going to turn isn't a lot of light suggesting she is turning into danger. The close up has been used to show her face and her reactions. In the background there are images or photographs on the wall however they are blurred out this could suggest that she doesn't care about her family and all she is thinking about how scared she is. The music is very eary like something horrible is going to appear, this makes the audience really nervous. The 180 degree rule was used again because moved from side to side and no where else.

This is the long shot of that little girl haunting the woman. However this could also be a low angle because the camera is tilted upwards suggesting the woman feels scared and little compared to this little girl. The lighting is very gloomy because this is where all the action happens, which because its a horror film it cant be really bright, the lighting needs to go with the atmosphere. The camera tilts down while the lift is moving to show more of an effect with the haunted girl.

    Corrections:
"The 180 degree rule was used again because moved from side to side and no where else." - you need to explain why and how it is used - ie realism, narrative flow, drama?

    To improve:
explain how editing creates meaning through the arrangement of shots in the narrative
